In the first six years of life, our genes are particularly sensitive to the environment. The interaction of nature and nurture “sculpts” the developing brain and other key biological systems. The regions of the brain that are highly sensitive to the environment during this period include all the basic competencies that we need to thrive throughout life, such as vision, hearing, emotional control, and cognitive competencies to interpret symbols and language.
